Roses: Standard and Garden
June is the month of the Rose, although they are also very popular in February as well. Roses are the ‘tried and true’ arrangement for most florists. Whether in two dozens, one dozen, half a dozen or a single stem, roses tend to be the go to choice for those who aren’t really sure what to order. Roses are a very classic flower but even classics can have some variation.
Standard Rose
Not only do roses come in a variety of colors, but there are a few styles of roses. Most often when you order ‘roses’ from a florist they will send you standard roses. Next time you are ordering roses, ask your florist what types of garden roses they have available.
Single Garden Rose
Ever wonder why you rose arrangement doesn’t smell like roses? Well, that is probably because they are standard roses. These roses have been bred for specific traits like color, size of head, petal count, and/or longevity. Unfortunately, other traits, like scent, are often lost during this process. If you want your room to smell like roses, ask your florist to use garden roses instead.

While scent will help you tell the difference, it is not the only way to pick out a garden rose. Garden roses have a much softer look to them, and often the petals will have a ruffled edge. They mix beautifully with peonies and are the perfect flower for that English Garden look. Even those who say they can live without flowers will have difficulty fighting the urge to smell these gorgeous roses. (Take it from someone who should not be smelling the roses. Allergies are so much fun.)
Standard Rose Arrangement
Just like standard roses, garden roses come in a range of colors from white and cream to purple and coral. One of our favorite garden roses is the ‘Free Spirit’ rose and it lives up to its name. The ‘Free Spirit’ rose has a vibrant center of yellow and coral and petals that transition into a sunrise magenta. This flower truly will brighten a cloudy day and make you wish for open fields, a soft breeze and sunshine.
